Desalination of groundwater by solar stills

Lack of clean drinking water is amongst the leading problems in Afghanistan, especially in form of salinity, being amongst the main concerns. As an attempt to find sustainable solutions, low cost solar stills were designed and built in Kabul city. Four different designs and outlines were proposed for this project, with the aim to use solar energy and the principle of evaporation and condensation in the production of distilled water. Of the proposed designs, three were built, in a total of 6 units, ranging from the size 0.1 to 1m2. The solar stills had different inclination on the glass cover and were built out of a variety of local materials, like plywood, galvanized iron, stainless steel, silicone, paint, insulation and more on. The experiment was conducted from the 17th to 27th of May, 2014. Hourly measurements of radiation, output and temperatures were registered from 07:00 am to 18:00 pm, and wind- and weather conditions were registered. Individual experiments such as cooling of glass, application of coal and increased salt concentration, were conducted within the research period.

Tubular nanostructures are highly helpful in semi conductor industries as a replacement for the wiring and silicone chips that are being used today. They give the additional advantage of cheaper resource and easier manipulation of architecture when the right parameters are used during synthesis. Since sol-gel route is a highly reliable and cost effective method of synthesis, the products can also be scaled up easily. The TiO2 nanotubes have photocatalytic capability which can be utilised in solar cells or as in this work as a catalyst for degrading organic dyes. The original rate of the catalysis can be improved by decreasing the band gap in the TiO2 nanotubes by doping them with conductive materials like iron, silver, gold etc. The carbon nanotubes were also synthesized by chemical vapor deposition using an indigenous set up using ferrocene as catalyst and benzene as the carbon source. These nanotubes when doped with semi conductors can be utilized for the semi conductor industry as chip-sets and highly conducting wires which are conducting in the inside and insulating on the outside.

Wrinkling of Dielectric Elastomer Membranes

Wrinkling of thin membranes due to different in- plane loadings and boundary conditions has drawn attention of researchers in structural engineering since the development of thin webs for early aircraft structures. More recently, pre-stressed lightweight membrane structures have been proposed for future space missions, for example solar sails, the next generation space telescope sunshield and space-based radar systems. These structures are often partially wrinkled during operation. The formation of wrinkles alters the load paths and the structural stiffness of the membranes. More importantly its occurrence degrades the surface accuracy of these structures, which is a key design parameter. This book focuses on wrinkling of thin silicone rubber membranes subjected to uniaxial tensile load with clamping boundary condition, and investigates the onset and profiles of wrinkles using both experimental and numerical approaches. An idea of suppressing wrinkle instabilities of dielectric elastomer membranes using through- thickness electric field was proposed and verified in both experiments and numerical simulations.
